Ban Chat Hydropower Plant

Details: Ban Chat hydropower project is located on Nam Mu river in Lai Chau province. The main task of the Project is to supply electricity to the national grid with a total design capacity of 220MW (2x110MW), the average annual power output is 769.7 million kWh (in addition to increase for Hoa Binh hydropower plant). and Son La hydropower plant is 388.4 million kWh). The Ban Chat hydroelectric dam has a height of 130m, a length of over 425m, constructed by roller compacted concrete (RCC) with a volume of 1,610,984m3.

Some key milestones of the project have been achieved:

- Commencement of work: January 8, 2006.

- River compartment phase 1: February 27, 2008.

- Construction of the RCC weir from October 31, 2009 to July 1, 2012.

- Starting storing water in phase 1 from December 10, 2011 and phase 2 from October 8, 2012 to allow normal water level (currently reaching 473.4/475m).

- No-load start-up of unit 1: February 2, 2013.

- The first trial grid connection of unit 1: February 8, 2013.

- Completing the prescribed 30-day trial and starting commercial generation: April 28, 2013.

- No-load start of unit 2: May 25, 2013.

- The first test grid connection of unit 2: May 29, 2013.

Location and land use area:

- Location: Key works and hydropower plants are located on Nam Mu river, in the territory of Muong Kim commune, Than Uyen district, Lai Chau province.

- Land occupied area: 8,231 ha including the area of land acquired and the flooded area of the lake (According to Decision No. 834/QD-TTg dated June 18, 2009 of the Prime Minister on approval of the migration master plan people, resettlement of Ban Chat hydropower project).

- Total investment: 9,198.143 billion VND
